1. Having a wedding rehearsal? Why not invite your wedding photographer. It gives the photographer a chance to formulate a plan
for maximising the photo opportunities of the day. In addition, it permits you to get to know the photographer and get used to be photographed from close by.
2. Consider having inexpensive cameras for the guests at the wedding meal This can be a nice thought, but bear in mind that the cameras are of limited quality. Additionally wedding guests do not usually make the best photographers, particularly after a few wedding toasts!
3. Consider purchasing two or three inexpensive digital cameras. Give them to certain people at the wedding and request they take informal and casual pictures. This is a job that can be entrusted to teenage guests, who might otherwise find some parts of the day boring. Giving them the job of unofficial wedding photographer can give a purpose to their day.
4. Perhaps you and your partner could share a compact digital camera, enabling you both to take spontaneous casual pictures, of each other throughout the day. These images can often be more effective at reminding you of the the days real feel and emotion.
5.Check with whoever is at officiating at your wedding – whether it is religious or civil – that there are no restrictions on photography. Weddings in churches tend to be more problematic, as sometimes photography is not allowed during the ceremony or at all inside the church itself. It is even more common for flash photography to be restricted.
6. Don’t forget the importance of lighting to achieve the best possible pictures of your wedding day. The level and quality of light changes from day to day. Have a plan to adapt your photography according to the weather conditions and time of day.
7. Traveling around Sussex, as a Brighton wedding photographer, I am often surprised by the lack of planning, that is applied to the average wedding photography. Thinking ahead and being organised, will make your wedding images far better, more than any other factor.
8. If a lack of funds is a factor, you could try getting in contact with a trainee wedding photographer to photograph your wedding for free, as an opportunity for them to get experience and portfolio images. Free advert websites such as Gumtree are a good starting point, though remember not to have too high expectations, as they are doing it for free. This is nearly always to be preferable, to asking someone from your social circle or family to be your wedding photographer, as in the event of problems, through bad luck, incompetence or negligence, it can cause ill feeling and damage a relationship that is important to you.
If you follow the above hints and suggestions you should have some lovely pictures to remind you of your wedding day.
